The Switzerland Trail
On Tuesday afternoon each week during the summer guests are given the opportunity for a step back into the mining history of Colorado when they take part in the Switzerland Trail Adventure!
The Switzerland Trail is an abandoned railroad bed that once served as rail supply and personnel transportation between Boulder and Ward. It was completed in 1898 and closed in 1917. During those years it was the shipping connection for a number of gold mines, receiving coal and food and sending gold ore to the stamping mills in the boom town of Ward.
This was the era of the prospector, the speculator and the big time operator. This was a piece of the old West, and it can be experienced by riding in ranch vehicles on this abandoned road bed. Yes, the ties and the rails are long gone, but the history is still there, and the views are spectacular.
You’ll see the old gold mining towns of Ward, Sunset, Salina, Summerset, and Gold Hill. You’ll ride up Left Hand Canyon and hear the history of the Arapaho and Cheyenne. You’ll visit the once thriving railroad picnic stop of Mt. Alto, where you’ll have some lemonade and music.
The scenery, the excitement, the history…it’s all part of the Switzerland Trail…a journey that is not soon forgotten.
